About me

Welcome to my blog. I’m an engineer based in Paris and working for the french railway company. On this blog, I will share my thoughts, passions, work, and discoveries. I am referring here to my personal projects in France and Réunion. I develop solutions and products for Internet operators and IP telephony companies.

Who am I and what do I do ?

My name is Kevin BATAILLE, I’m based in France and I’m a network and telecom engineer currently employed in a big corporation. My main job is to design and deploy telecommunications networks across France DCS (Distributed Control System).. These networks can be diverse and include older generations, such as SDH, or newer generations, such as WDM or OTN.

Fiber networks

I began my career in fiber optic infrastructure, where I was responsible for designing and maintaining the fiber optic network used by the French national railway company. In this role, I was responsible for selecting products and drafting technical rules and documentation related to the fiber optic network.

The French rail network relies heavily on TDM networks. A lot of Alcatel (PDH) and Sagemcom (SDH) equipment is still present on the network and powers the TGV lines. In my new position, I am responsible for maintaining these systems but also for finding alternative solutions to enable the decommissioning of this equipment.

Beyond the historical aspect, I also work on WDM transmission networks. Specifically, with the manufacturer Adtran (born from the merger with ADVA) and their FSP and CloudConnect ranges. I design WDM networks and maintain the long-haul WDM network that carries SDH and IP networks.

IP networks

I was able to work on products from FS.com, MikroTik, Cisco, Juniper and Nokia. On these devices I was able to design LAN and WAN networks with :

  • IPv4
  • IPv6
  • OSPF
  • BGP
  • MPLS (with LDP or RSVP)
  • EVPN
  • VXLAN
  • Multicast (IGMP and PIM-SM)

My skills

I’ve also been able to work on GNU/Linux system administration (Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS) with technologies such as :

  • NGINX
  • MariaDB
  • Docker
  • Bird
  • FRR
  • Kamailio (OpenSIPS)
  • Asterisk

Among the programming languages I can use are :

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Javascript (browser or NodeJS)
  • PHP (with CakePHP and Laravel)
  • SQL
  • Ruby (with Ruby on Rails)
  • Python

Behind the scene

May be you have noticed the link in the footer but this website is powered by WordPress. It is running on a virtual machine on a dedicated server hosted by OVHcloud. The tech stack is made of open source tools : GNU/Linux, NGINX, PHP, MariaDB, Traefik and of course WordPress.
